Salt Lake civic body allocates Rs 10 lakh to each 41 wards to complete road repairs before Diwali

In a bid to address the deteriorating road conditions in Salt Lake and its surrounding areas, the Salt Lake civic authorities have set an ambitious goal to complete road repairs before the upcoming Diwali festival. Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Council Member in charge of roads, Anita Mondal, expressed the authorities' commitment to this endeavor, stating that repair work was already in progress.

Despite the optimistic outlook from civic officials, concerns have been raised by several engineers and residents regarding the feasibility of achieving the goal within the proposed timeline. The poor road conditions, marked by deep potholes and craters, have posed serious safety risks for both motorists and pedestrians, particularly near the Wipro Crossing and the JK Saha bridge in Salt Lake. The state of these crucial routes, which connect various key destinations, has led to an increased frequency of accidents.

A senior official from the civic body's road repairs department acknowledged that thorough repairs had been neglected for at least eight years, exacerbating the deteriorating condition of the roads. Exposed brickwork and sharp edges from deteriorated asphalt further compounded the challenges for commuters. Despite the pressing need for comprehensive repairs, the civic authorities now face a tight deadline to address these issues before Diwali. As a result, the repairs are likely to be limited to patchwork, a less time-consuming and cost-effective solution. The Salt Lake civic body has allocated Rs 10 lakh to each of the 41 wards under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, although officials admit that the allocated funds may not suffice to address the extent of road damage.
